Nextdoor -Nextdoor is the neighborhood hub for trusted connections and the exchange of helpful information, goods, and services.

Safety Tips:

  1. NEVER open your front door without positively identifying who is there. If you don’t have a peephole, get one. I’ve seen countless cases where attackers gain access to victims simply by knocking on their door. Just because a stranger may look innocent and clean-cut, doesn’t mean you should trust them. Prevent strangers from entering your home, they often look like they could be your friendly neighborhood guy.

  2. Lock all doors and keep windows up when driving. Most car-jackings take place when vehicles are stopped at intersections.

  3. Walk with a buddy whenever possible. If you are walking alone at night, stay near well lit places of business and well lit walk ways. Avoid alleys and other poorly lit, closed spaces that might allow an attacker the advantage of surprise.

  4. Trust your gut when parking your car. If you feel uneasy about where you've just parked, put it in drive and keep moving. Park as close as possible to your destination.

  5. “Sixth sense.” “Gut instinct.” Whatever you call it, your intuition is a powerful subconscious insight into situations and people. All of us have this gift, but very few of us pay attention to it. Learn to trust this power and use it to your full advantage. Avoid a person or a situation which does not “feel” safe — you’re probably right.

  6. Be aware of your surroundings while you’re shopping or walking to class. Be aware of your surroundings. Be mindful of the area you parked your vehicle and the distance traveled during the day or night. Keep your head up and eliminate other distractions. Stay off your phone, so you can hear everything around you. Look both ways when crossing and use the crosswalks.

Here are some tips to follow if you are out and about:

  • Stay alert – awareness is your best defense.

  • Leave venues with friends wherever possible.

  • Try to stay in well-lit areas.

  • Be confident – even if you don't feel it.

  • Travel as if you know where you are going.

  • Take the most direct route and try to stay within areas where other people are around.

  • Trust your instincts – if you think something is wrong then act on it.

  • Have your keys available when you reach your home or car.

  • Carry a personal alarm or some type of personal defense and use it when necessary.
